Help - Questions and Answers

General Questions

What's the purpose of the NWT Tourism Photo Catalogue?

The NWT Tourism Photo Catalogue is a library designed for members of the media, so they might easily find high-quality images of the Northwest Territories which promote the area's tourism. These images are available at no cost to qualified publications via our user-friendly login and request system.

Are the images large enough for print?

Most images in the library are of print quality, roughly 5"x7" or 8"x10" at 300 dpi. The image downloads may be very large, so we recommend a high-speed connection if you request several photographs.

Will watermarks appear on the photographs?

No, the watermarks are only on the previews, and will not be on the full-size images.

How do I get help?

Our online help page (which you are reading now) should answer most of the common questions, but if you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us via email at communications@spectacularnwt.com, or by telephone at 1-800-661-0788 (in Canada) or 1-867-873-5007 extension 28 (internationally).

Searching

What's the easiest way to search for images?

At the top left side of every page is a simple search box. Just type in your query --which may be a location, a key word, a possible title, or even a photographer-- and hit Search to receive a listing of all those images which match.

If there ARE too many results, how can I find what I'm looking for?

If there's only a few pages returned, you can navigate through the pages by clicking on the page numbers on top, or by using the arrow buttons to move forward and backward. This way, you can view all of the results and choose the photographs you want.

However, sometimes you may receive hundreds of results, and you may wish to refine your search. You can do this via the "Search within results" box atop the page. For example, let's say you did a search for Yellowknife, and were overwhelmed by the number of photographs. If you then decide that what you're really looking for is a church in Yellowknife, you can narrow the results by typing "church" in the box, and clicking Search. You now have a list of all images taken in Yellowknife that include churches.

The best way to narrow your search, though, is through the Advanced Search form.

How does the Advanced Search page work?

The Advanced Search form helps you narrow down the criteria for your search, allowing you to sort through the catalog to find those pictures which exactly match your needs.

The Keyword search is probably the most important field, and works the same way as the basic search. Anything you enter here will be used to scour the image titles, picture descriptions, categories, and keywords. However, anything you put in the Photo Name field will be used only for the picture names. So if you remember a picture had the word "fossils"in its title, enter it here and search.

Many of the images in our library can also be searched by community. For example, choosing "Hay River" in the Community pull-down and hitting the search button will return all those photographs taken in Hay River. Likewise, by choosing "Hay River" here and entering "beach" in the Keyword field, you'll find all the pictures of beaches in Hay River.

The Category selector will allow you to choose a category of images, such as aurora, road travel, and fishing. Again, this may be used in conjunction with the other fields. You can also search by Photographer, Owner (the rights holder), and Season.

What does the "Recent Searches" menu do?

The Recent Searches menu, found at the left side of the page, is used to keep track of your last five searches. That way, whenever you wish to return to a previous search, you can simply click on its link. This can be very handy when you've forgotten your queries, or when you want to jump back to other results for the sake of comparison.

Viewing & Requesting Images

How do I get more information about images?

Simply click on the thumbnail of an image, and you'll receive plenty of other information, including a description, the location, the community, the time of year, the photographer, and some keywords and categories.

How can I see other similar images?

Aside from running a search, you can also take advantage of the keywords and categories assigned to an image. Let's say that you were viewing the image details of a sandy beach. One of the keywords is "beach". By clicking on that, you see all other images that have been tagged by that same keyword, allowing you to explore the catalogue via related material.

You can also browse by category. For example, if you are viewing a photograph of a float plane, one of the categories at the base of the page should be "Transportation". Click on that word to see what other images also appear in that category.

How do I download a higher quality image?

We've implemented an easy-to-use member-based system that will keep track of your requests, downloads, contact information, and more.

The first step is to create an account so that we may process your requests. In the top menu of the site, you'll see a "Sign Up" link. Click on that, and you'll be asked for your name, company, type of business, email address, and a password. You may also enter your other contact information.

Once you've submitted the form, you will be automatically logged into the system. (You may log in again later on with your email address and your password.) You can now request photographs via a "cart" system, just like an online commerce site. Simply perform your search, and when you find the images that you want, you have three choices:

  1. Click the Add to Cart button under an image thumbnail (if on a results page), or under the single image you're viewing. This adds that one photograph to your cart.
  2. If there's more than one photograph on a results page that you want, click the checkbox beside Select this item for each thumbnail, and then click the Add Selected button at the bottom of the page.
  3. If you want all of the images on a results page, click the Add All button at the bottom of the page.

When you've chosen all the photographs you want, click on the View My Cart link in the top menu. You can remove selections here, or continue to search and add more, until you're ready to submit your request. At that time, click on the Check Out button at the base of the page, and then hit Submit.

You will then receive a message that your request has been successfully submitted.

Can I download the images right away?

No, all requests have to go to our staff for approval. Once your request has been processed, you will receive an email with the results, as well as a link to download all approved full-size images.

You may also visit the site's Download Photos section in the future to download all approved photographs.

Can I see what I've requested?

At any time, you can visit the site, log in, and view your requests (again, see the top menu). This includes all those requests that are pending and approved. You may also remove items from your request.

Once you log into the site, you can click the Edit Account Info link in the top menu and edit your login and contact information.

I seem to have forgotten my password -- what do I do?

Don't worry: we can send it to you. Under the login error, or under the login boxes at top right, you'll see a link asking you if you've forgotten your password. Click that, enter the email you used to sign up with, and you'll soon receive an email with your password.
